What to Do in Bruges in Winter 2026: 4 Tips from a Local Guide
Looking for things to do in Bruges in winter? From late November, the whole city turns into a winter fairy tale once again. As dusk falls, the lights come on and the streets fill with the scent of mulled wine and speculoos. It creates a unique atmosphere you won't find the rest of the year. As a guide I walk through Bruges every day, and yet winter may well be my favourite season to show you the city.
In winter 2026-2027 there are special things on the programme from November right through to the end of January. First comes Winter Glow, with a renewed 'Light walk' and cosy stalls at the Christmas markets. December brings the 15th Bruges Christmas Run, where you can follow thousands of glowing Santa hats. The Midwinter Festival in Sint-Anna (my favourite neighbourhood) takes place too, and it's an absolute must. And finally, at the end of January, the 'Winter Giant' of Bruges comes to the Burg.
Below I've lined up the highlights for you, with dates, times and my personal tips to make the most of them. Perfect to enjoy with friends or the whole family.

Winter Glow Bruges 2026: light walk and Christmas markets
From 20 November 2026 to 31 January 2027, a completely revamped Winter Glow takes over the city. At the Christmas markets you can expect the typical cosy stalls again this year. The Winter Bar and the ice rink move to a brand-new location in King Albert I Park.
Follow the magical light walk
As soon as dusk settles over the city, around 4 pm, thousands of LED lights switch on automatically. The light walk winds along the canals, through narrow alleys and across monumental squares. The light installations turn the old facades into works of art, as if the city's history is coming back to life.
The walk is completely free and runs until the end of January 2027. The lights even stay on every evening until midnight!
Christmas markets and 'Bruges Cabins'
You'll find the Christmas markets on the Markt and Simon Stevinplein. In the new Bruges Cabins, cosy little wooden huts, you can warm up with a mulled wine or a hot chocolate. Prefer to keep moving? Head to the ice rink and finish at the Winter Bar.
My tip
Start your walk just before 4 pm and you'll see the city light up as darkness falls. On weekdays and in January the illuminated streets are noticeably quieter.
Bruges Christmas Run 2026 (Friday 11 December)
Picture a sea of 7,500 glowing Santa hats flowing through the historic streets. On Friday 11 December 2026, the Bruges Christmas Run celebrates its 15th anniversary edition. It's the sportiest and cosiest highlight of December. After the record turnout of 2025, this Christmas classic once again draws thousands of runners from Belgium and abroad.
Not running yourself? Come and cheer them on for a good cause. The atmosphere along the route is just as much fun, and everyone is welcome!
Lights, music and Santa hats
The entire route runs through festively lit streets and past historic monuments, right in the middle of the city's winter decorations.
- 20 points of entertainmentMusic, live entertainment and enthusiastic spectators spur you on along the way.
- A sea of lightsEvery runner gets a glowing Santa hat at the start, creating a rippling ribbon of light through the cobbled streets of Bruges.

Make a day of it
Combine the run with an afternoon of Christmas shopping and admire the nativity scene at the cathedral. After your effort, round off the day with a mulled wine or hot chocolate at the Christmas market!
Midwinter Festival in Sint-Anna (Sunday 13 December)
Want to escape the Christmas crowds for a while and experience the authentic Bruges? Then head to Sint-Anna, my favourite neighbourhood. On Sunday 13 December 2026, from 10.30 am to 6 pm, this quiet historic quarter celebrates its traditional Midwinter Festival. And it's only a fifteen-minute walk from the busy city centre.
In the Balstraat you step straight into a Christmas story. The air smells of handmade speculoos, baked the way grandma used to make it! The lacemakers (in Bruges we call them 'spellewerksters') show you their delicate work up close. Sing along with the Christmas choir and step inside the historic houses that open their doors for free that day. Strolling between the little white almshouses feels like stepping back in time.
Programme
- Christmas marketCharming stalls in the Balstraat with handmade products, fine trinkets and sweet treats.
- Historical charactersStrolling carol singers, a loud town crier and other figures from days gone by bring back the Christmas atmosphere of the past.
- Extra museum programmeThe Folklore Museum, the Lace Centre and the Adornes Domain host activities around Bruges heritage and old winter traditions. You'll find the full Midwinter Festival programme on the Musea Brugge website.
My tip
Sint-Anna is the Bruges of the backstreets: quiet lanes, white almshouses and small neighbourhood cafés. Come in the morning to enjoy the quarter at its calmest, before most visitors arrive.
The Winter Giant of Bruges on the Burg (30 and 31 January 2027)
Even after the holidays, there's plenty to experience in Bruges. New this winter is the Winter Giant spectacle, on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 January 2027.
For months, hundreds of people from Bruges have been working together on a gigantic puppet no less than 8 metres tall. On the last weekend of January, the Winter Giant of Bruges wakes from his deep winter sleep and walks to the monumental Burg, the oldest spot in Bruges. There, a grand live show of light, music, video and theatre bursts into life.
Put on your warmest winter coat and come along with the whole family. A spectacle like this doesn't come to Bruges often.
Bruges in winter with a local guide
Between all these events, winter is also a wonderful time to discover the quiet side of Bruges. The light is soft, and on weekdays and in January the canals are noticeably calmer. On my Hidden Backstreets Tour I take you through hidden alleys, past almshouses and peaceful squares. Along the way I share stories you won't find in any guidebook!
Combine a daytime walk through the backstreets with the Winter Glow lights in the evening, and you have the perfect winter day in Bruges. See you soon!
